A Girl Like Her

A Girl Like Her is a documentary film produced and directed by author and visual artist, Ann Fessler. It documents the stories of women who became pregnant and were banished to maternity homes to give birth and surrender their babies for adoption during the 1950s and 1960 in the US.

Ann Fessler is a common name to hear in the world of adoption. In the early 2000s, she interviewed over 100 women who lost their babies to adoption, which became the foundation of the book, The Girls Who Went Away. A Girl Like Her features narration by many of the women in those interviews, which reinforces the book’s heartbreaking narrative.
