Surviving the White Gaze

Rebecca Carroll - Surviving the White Gaze Book Cover

Surviving the White Gaze explores Rebecca Carroll’s journey to gain her mother’s acceptance, remain loyal to her adoptive parents, and uncover her racial identity.

Rebecca was the only Black person in her small New Hampshire town as a kid—adopted at birth by parents who believed in peace, love, and zero population growth. She had no genetic mirrors or ties to her true racial identity. This was compounded when she met her birth mother, who consistently undermined Rebecca’s sense of Blackness and self-esteem.
